Culture, Inclusion and Diversity

Ensuring a diverse and inclusive culture at Pelican is an expression of our values; Trusted, Helpful, Engaging and Expert. We believe our success is a direct result of the many people initiatives we have passionately created for our teams to benefit from. By constantly reviewing, improving and developing new initiatives we have created a diverse, engaging and positive culture. Our people work together in a collaborative way to drive innovation and customer satisfaction.

Joining our team

Our job adverts and role profiles have been created to ensure we attract people from as many diverse backgrounds as possible. We respect differences and take proactive steps to embrace them. We guarantee an interview for any applicant who declares they have a disability or who has previously served with the Armed Forces, as long as they meet the minimum requirements for the job.

We are flexible in the way we conduct our interviews, providing additional support or adjustments to assist you in starting your Pelican journey. We encourage mixed gender interviewing panels to ensure we remove any unconscious bias in our selection decisions and all of our managers are equipped to ensure they recruit our people solely based on skills, experience and the ability to do a great job. We pride ourselves on our ‘family friendly’ culture and support all our team members with a number of policies and initiatives. We offer flexible working from day one and support job share arrangements across a number of our roles.

Your journey

Whether joining our state-of-the-art Customer Service Academy programme for our customer facing team members or going straight into job specific training, we’ve always got diversity in mind when it comes to providing our newest Pelicans with a great training experience. Our trainers are always ready and willing to adapt to all learning styles and preferences, as we recognise the importance of equality and inclusion.

You’ll also have access to our mentoring framework, where we encourage our people to source mentors from different backgrounds to provide a variety of perspectives as well as offer career support and guidance. After a few months in the role, you’ll also be invited to join discussion sessions to offer your personal feedback on all aspects of your early Pelican journey, enabling us to constantly improve and refine our offering for our people.

Working Parents Network

We are passionate about everyone achieving their perfect work life balance and we understand what works for one person, doesn’t always work for another. This is why, following the launch of our ‘Family Friendly Policies’, we launched our ‘Working Parents Network’. Our group runs every few months and is the perfect opportunity for working parents to discuss any challenges they may face trying to balance work and family life but to also celebrate achieving a better balance, whether that be attending sports day or finishing early each day to do the school run. The group is also a great chance to share top tips to make both work and home life that little bit easier – we especially love the amazing family holiday hints! We are proud to offer a flexible working policy to help support our team in achieving a perfect work life balance and with so many of our team already taking advantage of flexible working, we are always looking for new initiatives to further develop our suite of family friendly policies.

The ARC Alliance - LGBTQ+ Network

We recognise that every single one of our team should an opportunity to both represent and be represented across our business. We want to develop a culture of true equality, ensuring LGBTQ+ team members are treated with respect and dignity at all times, have access to a non-judgemental support service, and have the opportunity to have a positive influence on ensuring all policies, practises and procedures are of an inclusive nature.

We provide a 'safe space' where likeminded people can receive support and signposting in the knowledge that all conversations are dealt with in the strictest of confidence if requested.

Each year we proudly march through the streets of Bristol, (you can't miss our bright yellow banner) and it has now become one of the highlights of our annual calendar of events. Our network is growing year on year and absolutely anyone is welcome to support in organising and attending this amazing event.

Health Hub

We recognise how important it is to feel happy and healthy at work. Our Health & Wellbeing committee are focused on delivering a program of inspiring and thought-provoking activities to maximise the wellbeing of all our team members and we have developed our own Health Hub ensuring our team members can access a range of support. This includes our ‘Healthy Conversations’ series, where we look to break the taboo of discussing perceived 'difficult' topics such as cancer, miscarriage, infertility and miscarriage. By sharing personal stories, we create a more open and inclusive culture where team members feel supported. We’ve created a network of ‘Shared Experience Supporters’ to ensure that anyone experiencing a difficult time can talk to someone with a similar experience or circumstances. We’ve invested in growing our team of experienced Mental Health First Aiders, to promote and support positive mental health, which is complimented by our leadership workshop ‘Supporting Wellbeing as a Leader’.
